We're partnering with a client to hire an Optical Network Development Engineer. This role offers the opportunity to work on the design, deployment, and optimisation of large-scale optical networks. While experience with DWDM systems is ideal, we're also open to strong IP Networking or Telecom Network Engineers who are looking to expand into the optical space.

We're looking for someone self-motivated and collaborative, with solid troubleshooting abilities and a passion for working in a fast-paced technical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and scale optical transport networks using DWDM and related technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (IP, transport, and operations) to introduce new network designs.
  • Support the deployment and integration of new optical platforms and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot complex network issues across both optical and IP layers.
  • Develop and document operational processes for consistent network performance.
  • Maintain network standards and support long-term scalability.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, performance, and resilience.

Ideal Background

We're open to candidates from any of the following areas:

  • Optical Networking (DWDM, CWDM, transport systems)
  • IP Networking (routing/switching, MPLS, L2/L3)
  • Telco Core/Backbone Engineering (transmission networks, backbone infrastructure)

Key Requirements

  • 5+ years in a network engineering or operations role, ideally within large-scale or service provider environments.
  • Solid understanding of either optical transport technologies (DWDM, CWDM) or IP networking fundamentals (BGP, OSPF, MPLS, etc.).
  • Experience working with or around major platforms like Ciena, Infinera, Cisco, Juniper, Nokia, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across multiple network layers.
  • Exposure to network management and monitoring tools.
  • Comfortable working with Unix/Linux systems - scripting experience is a plus.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Engineering, or relevant experience.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in network design, planning, or architecture.
  • Familiarity with SNMP, TL1, XML, or API-based network management.
  • Hands-on experience with optical planning tools is a bonus.
  • Scripting (Python, Bash, etc.) and automation mindset.
