Detailed Job Description:
We are seeking an Industrial Engineer to join a growing automation and manufacturing engineering team in a high-volume fiber optics production environment. This role is focused on optimizing manufacturing operations, improving workflow efficiency, and supporting the integration of new automation equipment into production.
You will analyze production processes, facility layouts, and operational workflows to identify improvement opportunities, reduce waste, and increase manufacturing capacity. You will work closely with automation, process, and manufacturing teams to ensure new equipment and processes are smoothly transitioned into production. This position is based onsite in the southwest metro area of Minneapolis and supports global manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze and optimize manufacturing workflows, production layouts, and material flow for fiber optics assembly operations
- Develop and maintain capacity models, cycle time analyses, and production throughput metrics
- Support the integration of new automation equipment into existing production lines, including layout planning, workflow design, and operator interface
- Conduct time and motion studies to establish labor standards and identify efficiency improvement opportunities
- Lead or support continuous improvement projects using Lean, Six Sigma, and other IE methodologies
- Collaborate with automation engineers, process engineers, and production management to plan and execute equipment deployment
- Develop and maintain standard work documentation, work instructions, and training materials for production operations
- Analyze production data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and root causes of inefficiency
- Support capital expenditure planning and cost-benefit analysis for manufacturing improvement projects
- Contribute to facility planning and layout optimization as production scales
- Partner with quality and safety teams to ensure manufacturing processes meet compliance standards
- Travel to global production locations as needed (up to 15%)
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- 3+ years of experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or production optimization
- Strong knowledge of Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement tools
- Experience with time studies, capacity analysis, and production line balancing
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, Minitab, or Power BI
- Experience with facility layout planning and workflow optimization
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing environment
- Ability to travel up to 15%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
- Experience in high-volume assembly or precision manufacturing operations
- Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES) or ERP systems
- Experience supporting automation equipment integration into production environments
- Background in fiber optics, electronics, or data center infrastructure manufacturing
- Experience with simulation or modeling tools for production planning
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar tools for layout design
