Fiber Assembly Technician
12‑Month Contract
Project Overview
They are launching a brand‑new pilot manufacturing line to build a prototype fiber cable/connector product. This is a true greenfield effort - new processes, new equipment, and a fully new fiber assembly line built station‑by‑station inside the Shakopee manufacturing lab.
The line includes multiple stations such as sorting, stripping, prepping, coating, assembly, inspection, testing, and documentation. All technicians will be cross‑trained across every station to ensure scalability and flexibility. Senior technicians are currently validating the first stations, and the team will expand to 10-12 technicians through early 2025.
This is hands‑on, lab‑based build work involving assembly, inspection, equipment operation, documentation, and quality assurance.
Job Responsibilities
Technicians will:
Perform hands‑on fiber assembly on a prototype product lineUse microscopes, crimpers, stripping tools, epoxies, and precision assembly equipmentConduct visual inspections and quality checks at assigned stationsFollow detailed work instructions, drawings, and SOPsDocument production results, measurements, and build notes (Excel/internal logs)Troubleshoot build issues and escalate defects to engineeringRotate across all stations to eventually build the full product end‑to‑endWork in a lab and manufacturing floor environment - not an office roleRequired Experience
No prior fiber experience is required - Commscope will train. We are seeking candidates with:
Strong mechanical or electro‑mechanical assembly background (cable harness, PCB assembly, medical device, aerospace, robotics, automotive, machine assembly, etc.)Comfort using small tools: crimpers, cutters, microscopes, calipers, tweezersAbility to follow written instructions and document work accuratelyStrong communication, teamwork, and reliabilityGCS is acting as an Employment Business in relation to this vacancy.

The software/controls engineers are responsible for bringing the custom automation equipment to life. The mechanical team designs and builds the physical machines; these engineers wire them up, program the PLCs, configure the vision systems, program the robots, design the HMI screens, and debug everything until the equipment runs production-ready. This is completely greenfield work. There is currently little to no PLC code on the machines, no safety guarding, and minimal controls. These engineers will write everything from scratch.
A key deliverable for this group is developing vision-based in-process quality inspection setups to replace $130K microscopes currently used on each production line. This requires strong machine vision experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesWrite PLC code from scratch for custom semi-automated manufacturing equipment (Allen-Bradley primary platform)Develop HMI programs and operator interfaces (ProFace HMIs)Program and integrate robotic systems (Epson robots)Configure and program machine vision systems for in-process quality inspection (Keyence systems)Develop vision setups to replace microscope-based inspection, performing automated quality checks during productionDesign electrical schematics and panel layouts for automation equipmentSet up and configure all sensors, I/O, and field devicesDebug and commission equipment end-to-end: wiring, code, motion, vision, roboticsCollaborate with mechanical engineers on equipment integration and with process engineers on process validationSupport equipment deployment to production lines in Shakopee and eventually Mexico
