Design Engineer - Carrier Ethernet / Telecom Network

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Design Engineer III - Carrier Ethernet / Telecom Network Design to join a high-performing telecom engineering team focused on carrier-grade Ethernet service delivery, fiber transport design, and metro network infrastructure solutions. The ideal candidate will possess strong experience in carrier/service provider networking environments, Layer 2/Layer 3 Ethernet technologies, and fiber-based network design.
This role requires an engineer who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, queue-driven operational environment, designing scalable and resilient Ethernet services for enterprise customers while supporting large-scale telecom infrastructure deployments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop carrier-grade Ethernet network services for enterprise and commercial customers
- Create detailed network/service designs for:
- Metro Ethernet
- Carrier Ethernet
- Ethernet Private Line (EPL)
- Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL)
- Ethernet LAN (ELAN) services
- Internet-based Ethernet services
- Produce detailed service and network diagrams using Microsoft Visio
- Interpret fiber survey documentation to determine service delivery design paths
- Analyze splice points, fiber routes, optical loss budgets, and serving infrastructure
- Design customer connectivity solutions across carrier transport networks
- Support Layer 2 and Layer 3 service delivery architectures
- Work closely with project managers, operations teams, and engineering groups to support deployments and escalations
- Prioritize and manage work queues across assigned regional markets
- Participate in technical troubleshooting and service design discussions
- Maintain high standards for design accuracy, scalability, and operational efficiency
- Support ongoing network upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure transformation initiatives
- Respond promptly to operational communications including email, IMs, and engineering requests
Required Technical Skills
- Strong experience with carrier-grade Ethernet and telecom networking environments
- Strong understanding of:
- Layer 2 Ethernet technologies
- Layer 3 routing concepts
- Carrier Ethernet services
- Metro Ethernet architectures
- Experience designing and supporting:
- EPL
- EVPL
- ELAN
- Metro Ethernet services
- Strong understanding offiber optic transport technologies including:
- Single-mode fiber
- Multi-mode fiber
- DWDM technologies
- Optical loss budgets
- Fiber splice points and fiber path analysis
- Experience interpreting and analyzing fiber survey documentation
- Familiarity with carrier-grade routing and switching technologies
- Experience working with:
- Ciena switches
- Cisco routers
- Nokia routers
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Visio for network/service design documentation
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, task-driven environment
- Strong troubleshooting, prioritization, and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of telecom or carrier networking experience
- Experience within telecom carriers, ISPs, or service provider environments
- Experience supporting enterprise Ethernet service delivery
- Familiarity with carrier transport and backhaul networks
- Exposure to GIS or telecom inventory/design tools
- Experience supporting large-scale fiber network deployments
- Previous experience in queue-based or production-oriented network design teams
- Comcast or major telecom carrier experience is highly preferred
