Detailed Job Description:

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join a growing automation team responsible for designing and building custom manufacturing equipment in a high-volume fiber optics production environment. This role is focused on the electrical design, integration, and commissioning of custom automation systems used across global manufacturing operations.

You will be responsible for designing electrical systems for custom machines and tooling, collaborating closely with mechanical, software, and controls engineers to deliver fully integrated automation equipment. This position is based onsite in the southwest metro area of Minneapolis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design electrical systems and control panels for custom automation equipment used in fiber optics manufacturing
  • Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar tools
  • Select and specify electrical components including motors, drives, sensors, relays, power supplies, and safety devices
  • Collaborate with mechanical, controls, and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems into automation equipment
  • Support PLC and HMI programming and integration alongside controls engineers
  • Participate in hands-on activities including wiring, panel builds, equipment debug, testing, and commissioning
  • Ensure electrical designs comply with NEC, UL, NFPA 79, and other applicable safety and industry standards
  • Develop and maintain electrical BOMs, documentation packages, and maintenance guidelines
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues on automation equipment during development, qualification, and production
  • Support equipment deployment and commissioning at global manufacturing sites
  • Participate in design reviews and provide input on electrical architecture for new automation projects
  • Analyze equipment performance data and recommend improvements to electrical systems
  • Travel to production locations as needed (up to 15%)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical design for industrial automation or custom equipment
  • Proficiency in electrical schematic design tools (EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent)
  • Experience selecting and specifying industrial electrical components (motors, VFDs, sensors, safety devices)
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, and industrial control systems
  • Familiarity with NEC, UL, and NFPA 79 electrical safety standards
  • Hands-on ability to wire, troubleshoot, and commission automation equipment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional and global teams
  • Ability to travel up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with servo systems, vision systems, and robotics integration
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT, IO-Link)
  • Experience with machine safety design and safety PLCs
  • Background in fiber optics, precision manufacturing, or high-volume production environments
  • Experience with SolidWorks Electrical or integrated electrical-mechanical design tools
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement practices
