Job Title: Network Engineer
Job Description:
We're seeking a skilled Network Engineer to support the nationwide deployment and maintenance of Comcast's virtual Cable Modem Termination Systems (vCMTS) and Remote PHY (RPHY) turn-ups. This cutting-edge, cloud-based vCMTS technology replaces traditional analog hardware, enabling faster speeds, improved network performance, and enhanced reliability for Xfinity customers, ensuring reliable activation of next‑generation access network (NGAN) platforms. As part of the NGAN Operations Team, the engineer will be responsible for vCMTS platform stand‑up, including software installation, system validation, network configuration, and ongoing maintenance. By shifting core CMTS functions to edge compute infrastructure, Comcast achieves greater agility, cost efficiency, and localized network intelligence. This role is pivotal to our next-generation access network (NGAN) strategy and demands deep expertise in production operations within a 24x7 environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform software installation, system configuration, and network readiness validation for new vCMTS deployments.
- Execute standardized processes to activate and validate Remote PHY devices across national footprints.
- Perform system upgrades, RMA replacements, and automation tasks (Python, Bash, etc.).
- Identify recurring service-impacting issues and collaborate with development teams to implement long‑term fixes.
- Participate in on‑call rotation to troubleshoot and restore service during outages.
- Diagnose and resolve issues involving Juniper, Arista, or Cisco network devices.
- Build, replace, and troubleshoot server hardware and system software.
- Develop scripts to streamline operational workflows and reduce manual effort.
- Work with Product and Project Management teams to integrate and operationalize new NGAN products.
- Partner with regional engineering teams to enhance product stability and build automation tools.
Experience & Skills
- 5+ years of hands‑on experience in a 24×7 production operations environment.
- Strong proficiency in Unix/Linux environments.
- Experience with scripting and automation (Python, Bash, etc.).
- Proven ability in network troubleshooting and configuration (CCNA/JNCIA optional but beneficial).
- Demonstrated skill in server hardware and software troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Jenkins, Ansible, Git is a plus.
- Experience with system hardware builds and replacements.
- Exposure to new product integration and operational readiness processes.
- Ability to work in a 24/7 operations model, including on‑call, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
- Experience supporting virtual CMTS platforms.
- Hands‑on work with Juniper, Arista, or Cisco network devices.
- Background in automation frameworks and CI/CD pipelines.
- Understanding of IT service monitoring and observability.
