About the Role:
We are looking for a highly skilled Field Technician to join our team, specializing in OTDR testing, troubleshooting and Fiber optic splicing.
The Field Engineer will be responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing Fiber optic links in large-scale data centre environments.
The role involves extensive travel to customer sites, including major clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct OTDR testing to diagnose defects, breaks, and bends in Fiber optic cables on large Data Centre environments.
Identify Fiber count, location, and possible damage using OTDR equipment.
Perform troubleshooting and repair of Fiber optic links at customer sites.
Operate and configure OTDR machines, including EXFO and JDSU models.
Execute Fiber splicing and testing procedures to ensure network integrity.
Work with both ISP (Inside Plant) and OSP (Outside Plant) network infrastructures.
Interpret and analyse OTDR trace diagrams and return time calculations for troubleshooting.
Conduct network documentation, maintain records, and generate detailed test reports.
Provide customer support, including installation assistance and on-site training.
Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices for Fiber optic network testing.
Qualifications & Experience:
Proven experience in OTDR testing and Fiber optic splicing.
Familiarity with ISP/OSP network infrastructure and documentation.
Strong understanding of Fiber optic network testing techniques.
Proficiency in desktop software programs such as MS Suite (Excel, Word, Visio).
Ability to work independently in field-based assignments with minimal supervision.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Strong communication skills to interact with clients and provide technical support.
Willingness to travel 80-90% of the time, with assignments lasting up to two weeks.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience working with major telecom or data centre clients.
Certifications related to Fiber optics or OTDR testing (e.g., CFOT, FOA, or equivalent).
Knowledge of high-power laser signal testing procedures and network troubleshooting techniques.

Project Overview
The client is launching a brand‑new pilot manufacturing line to build a prototype Fiber cable/connector product. This is a true greenfield effort - new processes, new equipment, and a fully new Fiber assembly line built station‑by‑station inside the Shakopee manufacturing lab.
The line includes multiple stations such as sorting, stripping, prepping, coating, assembly, inspection, testing, and documentation. All technicians will be cross‑trained across every station to ensure scalability and flexibility. Senior technicians are currently validating the first stations, and the team will expand to 10-12 technicians through early 2025.
This is hands‑on, lab‑based build work involving assembly, inspection, equipment operation, documentation, and quality assurance.
Job Responsibilities
Technicians will:
Perform hands‑on Fiber assembly on a prototype product lineUse microscopes, crimpers, stripping tools, epoxies, and precision assembly equipment.Conduct visual inspections and quality checks at assigned stations.Follow detailed work instructions, drawings, and SOPs.Document production results, measurements, and build notes (Excel/internal logs)Troubleshoot build issues and escalate defects to engineeringRotate across all stations to eventually build the full product end‑to‑endWork in a lab and manufacturing floor environment - not an office roleRequired Experience

Manage inventory of tools, test sets, spare parts, and network equipment.Coordinate shipping, receiving, and tracking of company and customer materials.Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure timely replenishment of consumables and field materials.Track asset utilization and ensure proper repair and replacement processes.Documentation & Reporting
Update installation records, logs, and detailed notes within trouble ticketing systems.Record all activities, including provisioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting actions.Provide regular updates, reports, and escalation summaries to management.Ensure all transactional updates are properly documented within company systems.Systems & Tools Utilization
Utilize industry-standard tools and software for:Network troubleshooting and diagnosticsAsset tracking and inventory managementTrouble ticketing and time tracking systemsAccurately locate, mark, and protect underground outside plant facilities.Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve network issues.Participate in training and coaching to develop technical and system knowledge.Evaluate performance using provided tools and reports, identifying areas of improvement.Support installation, modification, and decommissioning of network infrastructure as needed.Qualifications
Basic understanding of telecommunications and network infrastructure (Fiber, Ethernet, SONET, IP).Knowledge of AC/DC power systems and critical infrastructure maintenance.Familiarity with diagnostic tools and network troubleshooting processes.Strong organizational and asset management skills.Ability to interpret technical documentation and maintain accurate records.Willingness to learn internal systems (ticketing, provisioning, inventory management).
