Network Field Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Network Field Engineer / Transport Technician to support telecommunications transport and critical infrastructure sites across Long Island.
This is a hands-on, site-based field position responsible for maintaining network infrastructure, installing and provisioning transport services, troubleshooting service-impacting issues, supporting restoration activities, and ensuring field assets and equipment are properly maintained.
The role will be based from Garden City, NY, with regular travel throughout the Long Island territory - from Queens and Nassau County through Suffolk County and potentially as far east as Montauk.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, provision, test, maintain, and troubleshoot telecommunications transport equipment and services.
- Support circuits and transport technologies ranging from DS0, DS1, and DS3 through SONET OC-3 to OC-192, as well as Ethernet, IP, wavelength, and DWDM environments.
- Troubleshoot service-impacting network issues and replace defective cards, modules, optics, and related field equipment.
- Perform testing and fault isolation using equipment such as:
- Viavi ONA800
- EXFO FIP500 fiber inspection scopes
- OTDRs
- Optical power meters
- Fiber inspection and test equipment
- Assist with network route monitoring, outage response, service restoration, and preventive maintenance activities.
- Support telecommunications critical infrastructure, including:
- DC power plants
- Rectifiers
- Tertiary power systems
- BDCBB installations
- Limited AC power systems
- Level 1 preventive maintenance involving HVAC and high-voltage electrical infrastructure
- Perform underground outside-plant locating and marking using industry-standard cable and utility locating equipment.
- Maintain accurate inventory and accountability for field assets, spare equipment, replacement components, tools, and truck stock.
- Travel between telecommunications sites throughout the assigned Long Island territory as operational needs require.
Required Experience
- Previous hands-on telecommunications field experience within a carrier, ILEC, CLEC, MSO, or comparable network environment.
- Strong working knowledge of transport technologies, ideally includinglegacyTDM environments such as:
- DS0
- DS1 / T1
- DS3
- SONET / OC-3 through OC-192
- Experience supporting modern transport technologies such as Ethernet, IP, wavelength services, and DWDM.
- Hands-on experience with fiber testing, inspection, troubleshooting, and restoration.
- Familiarity with telecommunications DC power and critical facility infrastructure.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot network and equipment issues in live field environments.
- Experience managing field inventory, spares, tools, and truck stock.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout Long Island.
Preferred Background
Candidates with field experience from major telecommunications carriers, fiber providers, cable/MSO organizations, or similar environments are particularly relevant. Comparable experience may come from organizations such as Verizon, Altice/Optimum, Charter Communications, Zayo, Crown Castle, Windstream, or legacy Level 3 environments.
Technical or vocational training in electronics, telecommunications, networking, or a related discipline is preferred.
Military candidates with hands-on experience in communications, electronics, telecommunications systems, signal systems, or network infrastructure are also strongly encouraged to apply.
Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will be a hands-on field technician who is comfortable working across both legacy carrier transport systems and modern fiber/IP infrastructure. They should be capable of independently troubleshooting issues in the field, supporting network restoration, working safely around critical infrastructure, and traveling throughout the Long Island territory as required.
