Senior AI Engineer (Contract)
We are partnering with a large international professional services organisation undertaking a major AI transformation initiative. The company is developing a next-generation AI platform that will enable business users to create, deploy, manage, and scale AI-powered agents using proprietary enterprise data and knowledge sources.
As a Senior AI Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and evolving the platform architecture, bringing together existing capabilities into a scalable, secure, and production-ready solution. You will assess technologies, define architectural direction, and guide decisions across agent frameworks, retrieval systems, model integration, orchestration, and operational governance.
This position combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership and offers significant influence over the future direction of the platform.
Responsibilities
- Define and implement the architecture for an enterprise AI agent platform.
- Evaluate and recommend suitable large language models, tooling, and deployment approaches.
- Design and optimise agent orchestration, memory, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities.
- Develop approaches for prompt management, testing, versioning, and governance.
- Integrate structured and unstructured data sources from across the business.
- Establish best practices for scalability, performance, security, and maintainability.
- Monitor and optimise AI usage, token consumption, and operational costs.
- Assess commercial and open-source AI technologies and recommend fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and architectural guidance to engineering stakeholders.
- Translate complex technical decisions into clear recommendations for business and technology leaders.
Desired Experience
- Strong experience building production-grade AI applications and platforms.
- Deep understanding of LLMs, agentic AI architectures, and retrieval-based systems.
- Experience with AI orchestration frameworks, memory systems, and multi-agent workflows.
- Expertise in prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and model optimisation.
- Familiarity with modern cloud-based AI services and infrastructure.
- Experience integrating diverse enterprise data sources and knowledge repositories.
- Strong software engineering background with an emphasis on scalability and platform design.
- Ability to balance technical excellence with business value, cost efficiency, and user adoption.
Contract Details
- Initial 3-month contract with potential for extension.
- Remote within Europe.
- Occasional in-person collaboration sessions may be required.
