We are supporting a global broadband equipment manufacturer looking for a Field Application Engineer to support HFC access network products across North America. This role will focus on DOCSIS 4.0 deployments, HFC outside-plant equipment, RF troubleshooting, amplifier and optical/RF node support, and customer-facing technical engagement with major cable operators.
This is a remote-based contract role with regular travel to customer/operator sites. The position has the opportunity to convert to a full-time role.
The Role
The Field Application Engineer will act as the technical bridge between product engineering, sales, and customer field teams. You will support the deployment, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization of HFC access network equipment, including amplifiers, optical/RF nodes, passives, and related outside-plant hardware.
This is a hands-on, customer-facing role for someone with real HFC plant experience who is comfortable working directly with MSO engineering teams, field technicians, and internal product teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Support field deployment, commissioning, and turn-up of HFC outside-plant equipment, including amplifiers, optical/RF nodes, and passives
- Provide technical support for DOCSIS 4.0 upgrade programs, including mid-split, high-split, and extended spectrum initiatives
- Troubleshoot RF and HFC plant issues, including signal alignment, sweep, ingress, noise, return-path issues, and plant performance problems
- Use RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal level meters, signal generators, sweep systems, and plant monitoring tools
- Work directly with cable operator/MSO teams during lab validation, field trials, production deployment, and issue resolution
- Support firmware upgrades, configuration workflows, remote management tools, and deployed hardware troubleshooting
- Provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support, including demos, technical workshops, customer training, and field documentation
- Support RFI, RFP, and RFQ technical responses for cable operator customers
- Create technical documentation, application notes, deployment playbooks, case studies, and field support materials
- Capture field issues and customer feedback, then work with engineering teams to drive product improvements
- Coordinate with internal engineering, sales, customer support, third-party contractors, and operator field teams
Required Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in HFC, DOCSIS, cable broadband, RF, or outside-plant network environments
- Strong understanding of DOCSIS networks, ideally including DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 4.0
- Experience with HFC outside-plant equipment such as amplifiers, optical nodes, RF nodes, passives, taps, splitters, and related access network hardware
- Hands-on RF troubleshooting experience, including sweep, alignment, ingress mitigation, return-path diagnostics, noise troubleshooting, and plant optimization
- Experience using RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal level meters, sweep tools, signal generators, or similar field/lab equipment
- Ability to support customer-facing technical meetings, field escalations, training sessions, and deployment reviews
- Understanding of firmware upgrades, equipment configuration, remote diagnostics, and field support workflows
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to travel regularly to customer/operator sites as needed
Nice to Have
- DOCSIS 4.0 field deployment or lab validation experience
- Experience with Extended Spectrum DOCSIS, mid-split, high-split, Remote PHY, Remote MACPHY, or DAA architectures
- Experience with HFC performance metrics such as MER, BER, CNR, return loss, leakage, ingress, and upstream/downstream signal quality
- Prior Field Application Engineer, Systems Engineer, Network Engineer, RF Engineer, HFC Engineer, or Plant Engineer experience
- Experience supporting Tier-1 cable operators or MSOs
- Experience with RFI/RFP/RFQ support and technical proposal input
- Exposure to Node.js, Python, scripting, automation, or internal tooling
- SCTE certifications such as BTS, BDS, DOCSIS Engineering Professional, or DOCSIS 3.1/4.0 training
- Experience with products or environments from companies such as CommScope/ARRIS, ATX Networks, Vecima, Technetix, Harmonic, Casa Systems, Vantiva, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Altice, Mediacom, or similar
Ideal Candidate Background
The ideal candidate will come from a cable broadband, HFC, DOCSIS, RF, or access network background. Strong fits may come from OEM/vendor-side field engineering roles or operator-side plant/access network engineering roles.

Location and Travel
This role is remote-based, with regular travel to customer and operator sites across the US.
