Automation Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer - CODESYS Controls Developer to join a high-performing automation engineering team focused on developing next-generation industrial control systems for large-scale automated material handling environments.
This is a hands-on role responsible for designing, developing, and deploying scalable machine control software using CODESYS V3, integrating industrial hardware, and building reusable software components that support highly automated operations. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in PLC software development, industrial automation, state-machine architecture, and hardware integration.
Key Responsibilities
Controls Software Development
- Design, develop, and maintain industrial control software using CODESYS V3 on Linux-based Industrial PCs.
- Develop reusable Function Blocks, libraries, and hardware abstraction layers using IEC 61131-3 Structured Text.
- Implement robust control logic using state-machine architectures and CASE-based programming approaches.
- Apply object-oriented programming principles including abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, interfaces, and methods.
- Create scalable software solutions that can be deployed across multiple automation systems and equipment types.
Requirements Analysis & Solution Design
- Gather, analyze, and clarify functional and technical requirements.
- Define machine behavior for operational states, fault handling, recovery processes, safety conditions, and edge cases.
- Produce technical documentation, software design specifications, and interface definitions.
- Participate in technical design reviews and collaborate with engineers and stakeholders on solution development.
Hardware Integration & Validation
- Integrate, configure, and validate industrial automation devices including:
- Motor Driven Rollers (MDRs)
- Motors and drives
- Sensors and photo-eyes
- Actuators
- Stack lights
- IO-Link devices
- Configure and troubleshoot EtherCAT communication networks.
- Perform system testing, debugging, and validation using real automation hardware.
Application Assembly & Deployment
- Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
- Develop and maintain JSON-based configurations for control application deployment.
- Configure, test, and validate applications across multiple Industrial PCs.
- Support commissioning, startup, and deployment activities within automated facilities.
Collaboration & Engineering Excellence
- Participate in code reviews and technical design reviews.
- Utilize Git-based source control and modern software development practices.
- Track development activities through project management tools.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, including stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
- Deliver iterative solutions and incorporate stakeholder feedback throughout the development lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience developing industrial automation, machine control, or PLC-based software solutions.
- Hands-on experience with:
- CODESYS V3, and/or
- Beckhoff TwinCAT Structured Text
- Strong expertise in IEC 61131-3 Structured Text programming.
- Experience designing and implementing state-machine-based control systems.
- Strong understanding of:
- Machine sequencing
- Fault detection and recovery
- Startup and shutdown logic
- Emergency stop handling
- Equipment state management
- Experience developing modular Function Blocks and reusable software libraries.
- Strong knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts within PLC environments.
- Experience integrating and troubleshooting industrial automation hardware.
- Working knowledge of EtherCAT communication networks.
- Experience with Linux-based industrial computing platforms.
- Proficiency with Git and collaborative software development workflows.
- Ability to translate business and operational requirements into technical solutions.
