The Opportunity

Backend Software Engineer to join a growing technology team focused on transforming and automating accounting processes. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working on complex backend systems, implementing AI-driven solutions, and modernising legacy platforms.

You will play a key role in developing intelligent automation capabilities, integrating OCR technologies, and deploying AI-powered workflows that improve operational efficiency across the business. At the same time, you'll be expected to confidently work within and enhance an existing Ruby-based codebase.

This is a hands-on individual contributor position within a collaborative engineering team of approximately 8-10 people.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIsEnhance and modernise legacy Ruby applicationsImplement AI and machine learning solutions to automate accounting and finance processesDevelop and integrate OCR technologies for document processing workflowsBuild scalable, reliable, and secure backend architecturesCollaborate with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to deliver automation initiativesIdentify opportunities to improve performance, maintainability, and system efficiencyParticipate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisionsSupport the continuous evolution of AI-enabled business solutions

Required Experience

Strong backend engineering experienceProven experience working with Ruby/Ruby on RailsExperience implementing or integrating AI/ML solutionsExperience with OCR technologies and document automation workflowsStrong understanding of API design and backend architectureExperience working with legacy systems and modernization projectsSolid knowledge of software engineering best practices, testing, and CI/CDAbility to work independently in a remote-first environmentStrong English communication skills

Nice-to-Have

Accounting, finance, or bookkeeping domain experienceExposure to intelligent document processing solutionsExperience within fintech, accounting software, or automation-focused environmentsAdditional cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
