Senior Rust Engineer | Version Control Systems | Open Source Infrastructure
We are looking for an experienced Rust Engineer to join a high-impact engineering initiative focused on the future of developer tooling, large-scale version control systems, and AI-assisted software development.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to open-source technologies that are enabling next-generation development workflows across large repositories, distributed teams, and automated agent-based environments.
You will work on challenging systems-level engineering problems spanning source control, distributed systems, cloud-backed repositories, virtual file systems, performance optimisation, and developer experience.
What You'll Be Working On
Extending and enhancing the version control ecosystemContributing to gitoxide and Git compatibility initiativesBuilding cloud-native repository backends designed for enterprise-scale developmentDeveloping high-performance storage, caching, and virtual filesystem solutionsImproving support for large repositories and distributed workflowsDesigning extensibility frameworks, APIs, and plugin architecturesEnhancing developer tooling for AI-assisted and automated software engineering workflowsCollaborating directly with open-source maintainers and upstream communities
What We're Looking For
Essential
Strong commercial experience with RustDeep understanding of Git and modern version control conceptsExperience building developer tools, infrastructure platforms, SDKs, CLIs, or systems softwareStrong knowledge of software architecture and distributed systemsExperience contributing to open-source projectsTrack record of delivering high-quality production software
Highly Desirable
Experience with Git internals, source control systems, or repository storage technologiesContributions to projects such as Git, gitoxide, JGit, Mercurial, or similar toolingKnowledge of packfiles, commit graphs, refs, reftables, partial clone, or repository performance optimisationExperience with storage engines, filesystems, caching layers, or large-scale infrastructureFamiliarity with gRPC, distributed services, authentication systems, and cloud platformsOpen-source maintainer experience or a strong public GitHub profile
