Under periodic supervision, the Telecommunications Technician II performs varied tasks of moderate complexity requiring the application of standard procedures and criteria. This role is responsible for the installation, decommissioning, and troubleshooting of network equipment and circuits, including fiber, transport equipment, and all critical infrastructures. The position requires hands-on physical work at customer sites, including battery reading, replacement, and gateway card swaps, as well as DC electrical work.
A TYPICAL DAY
You will report to the Phoenix location each morning, join the daily workload call, and communicate your priorities and capacity for the day. From there, you'll be assigned tasks and begin completing work independently. You should be prepared to set up test sets, read net builds, and proactively offer support to teammates when capacity allows.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Network Installation & Maintenance
Install, provision, test, and maintain DS0 through OC192 services, transport equipment, signaling, private line, and data services.Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair customer and network troubles; remove and replace defective modules, track spares, and ensure timely repair.Perform site surveys, fiber locating, and oversee splicing of Metro/Long Haul Outside Plant fibers.Monitoring & Restoration
Monitor routes and execute restoration in the event of a service interruption.Proactively respond to potential problem areas to ensure the integrity of the network.Battery & Gateway Operations
Perform physical battery work at customer sites, including taking battery readings and replacing batteries (must be able to lift 75+ lbs).Conduct gateway work including swapping cards and performing DC electrical tasks.Equipment Operations & Maintenance
Operate and maintain tools, test sets, and electronic equipment including fiber optic transmission equipment, lightwave multiplexing equipment, digital multiplexers, channel banks, circuit termination equipment, AC/DC power equipment, OTDR, and BER test equipment.Perform preventive and scheduled maintenance on equipment and critical infrastructure, including HVAC systems, high-voltage electrical systems, and DC Power Plants.Site & Asset Management
Manage asset logistics: process deliveries, replenish consumables, and coordinate shipping and receiving of materials.Maintain site security and cleanliness at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Education
High School Diploma or GED required.Field of study in Electronics or Telecommunications preferred.A combination of education and relevant experience is acceptable.Experience
2-5 years of experience in installation, testing, and turn-up of telecommunications equipment including SONET, DCS, DWDM, Routers, and Switches.Strong technical and mechanical background with experience on latest-generation transport gear and critical infrastructure.Must possess a high degree of experience and/or knowledge in at least two of the four major technician disciplines:Transmission (DS1/DS3/SONET)Switching (Circuit-Switching/SS7)TCP/IP (Routers/Higher-Layer Protocols)Outside Plant (Fiber Locating, OTDR, Mass Fusion Splicing)Required Technical Skills
Ability to read work documents, circuit flow diagrams, and circuit labels.Proficiency with test set setup and net build interpretation.PC proficiency, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications.Ability to quickly learn corporate databases and internal systems.Preferred Technical Skills
Working knowledge of meters such as ONA 800 and NCS100.Data center experience.Non-Technical Skills
Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally with customers at external sites.Strong customer service orientation.Collaborative team player with the ability to support others proactively.Self-starter with strong problem-solving abilities.Attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills.Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.Must be able to lift 75+ lbs.Valid driver's license required.Ability to work in all weather conditions.Schedule Requirements
On-call 24/7 on a rotational basis; stand-by, call-out, dispatch, and overtime are required as dictated by business needs.Certifications: No specific certifications required.
