As Mechanical Engineer, you will serve as the lead designer on the equipment development team, taking ownership of complex machine designs from initial concept through build, testing, and production deployment. This is a highly hands-on engineering role focused on custom machine design and automation equipment development, not manufacturing engineering.
You'll lead complete mechanical assemblies, collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and help drive innovative equipment solutions that support advanced manufacturing processes.
What You'll Do
Lead the mechanical design of complex semi-automated manufacturing equipment using SolidWorksManage designs within SolidWorks PDM, ensuring proper revision control and data managementCreate detailed 2D mechanical drawings with full dimensioning, tolerancing, and GD&TSelect materials and specify purchased components including bearings, actuators, pneumatics, sensors, and linear motion systemsDesign for manufacturability, assembly efficiency, operator usability, and serviceabilityPerform hands-on prototyping, assembly, testing, debugging, and equipment qualificationPartner with controls, software, and electrical engineers to integrate PLCs, robotics, vision systems, and automation technologiesTranslate process requirements into practical equipment solutions alongside process engineering teamsSupport deployment of equipment to production operations in Shakopee and future expansion sites in Mexico

Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience designing custom automation or semi-automated manufacturing equipmentExpert proficiency with SolidWorks, including complex assemblies and mechanismsExperience with SolidWorks PDM and engineering document controlStrong 2D drafting skills with GD&T, tolerancing, and manufacturing documentationKnowledge of material selection for precision equipment applicationsExperience integrating purchased mechanical components into custom-built systemsHands-on experience building, assembling, and troubleshooting equipmentProven ability to work effectively with controls, electrical, software, and process engineering teamsBackground in precision assembly equipment, fiber optics, medical devices, or small form-factor manufacturingExperience designing benchtop or tabletop semi-automated equipmentFamiliarity with PLC-controlled equipment and vision systems from a mechanical integration perspectiveGCS is acting as an Employment Business in relation to this vacancy.

Join a growing manufacturing engineering team responsible for designing and building the automated equipment that powers high-volume production of fiber optic connectivity products used in data centers and network infrastructure.
This is an in-house machine-building environment where engineers design and develop custom automation, manufacturing machinery, tooling, and fixtures used directly in production. You'll take ownership of projects from concept through production, working closely with fabrication, assembly, controls, and manufacturing teams to bring equipment to life and support it on the factory floor.
What You'll DoDesign custom automated manufacturing equipment using SolidWorks, including machines, assembly cells, tooling, fixtures, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT).Develop large assemblies, detailed manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).Apply GD&T principles and tolerance stack-up analysis to create fabrication-ready designs.Partner with machinists, assemblers, technicians, and controls engineers during equipment build, commissioning, and debug activities.Support prototype development, testing, validation, and production deployment.Troubleshoot and optimize manufacturing equipment directly on the production floor.Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on manufacturability, reliability, and assembly efficiency.Collaborate with electrical and controls teams to integrate pneumatics, motion systems, robotics, and other automation technologies.Manage projects from initial concept through production release and ongoing support.Required QualificationsStrong proficiency with SolidWorks, including parts, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.Experience designing custom machinery, automation equipment, manufacturing systems, or production equipment.Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, BOM development, and drawing creation.Hands-on manufacturing experience, including support for prototype builds, production operations, or equipment troubleshooting.Ability to work effectively with machinists, technicians, assemblers, and cross-functional engineering teams.Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent machine design experience.Preferred QualificationsExperience with tooling, fixtures, EOAT, conveyors, pneumatics, motion control systems, robotics, or machine vision.Familiarity with PDM, Windchill, or similar document and revision-control systems.Experience using Creo as a secondary CAD platform.FEA experience for structural or stress analysis.Background working for a machine builder, automation integrator, industrial equipment manufacturer, or internal manufacturing automation team.
